Historical Overview of Milwaukee’s Sports Legacy
In the late 19th century, Milwaukee’s now-famous sporting spirit began to take shape. The Milwaukee Athletic Club, established in 1882, became a cornerstone for promoting various sports in the city. Around the same time, cricket matches were a common sight, reflecting the city’s mixed sporting interests (due to its diverse immigrant communities). These early endeavors laid the groundwork for a community that would soon embrace a wide span of athletic pursuits.
Baseball’s Roots in MKE
Baseball quickly became a focal point in Milwaukee’s sports scene. The city was home to several teams named the “Brewers” long before the current MLB franchise. Notably, the American Association’s Milwaukee Brewers played from 1902 to 1952, capturing multiple league titles and nurturing local talent. This era set the stage for Milwaukee’s enduring love affair with baseball.
In 1953, the Boston Braves relocated to Milwaukee, becoming the first Major League Baseball team to call the city home. The Milwaukee Braves made an immediate impact, clinching the National League pennant in 1957 and going on to win the World Series that year, defeating the New York Yankees in a seven-game thriller. This championship marked Milwaukee’s first major professional sports title and ignited a fervent baseball culture.
After the Braves’ departure to Atlanta in 1966, Milwaukee’s baseball void was filled when the Seattle Pilots relocated to the city in 1970, becoming the Milwaukee Brewers. Since then, the Brewers have been an integral part of the city’s sports identity, with moments like their 1982 American League pennant win cementing their place in Milwaukee’s rich sports history.
These foundational years not only established Milwaukee’s teams but also fostered a community deeply connected to its sports franchises, setting the stage for future successes and a lasting legacy in the world of athletics.

Major Professional Sports Teams
Green Bay Packers (NFL)
While the Green Bay Packers are based in Green Bay, their connection to Milwaukee is significant. From 1933 to 1994, the Packers regularly played a portion of their home games in Milwaukee to attract a more extensive fan base and increase revenue. Initially, they played at Borchert Field, then moved to Wisconsin State Fair Park, followed by Marquette Stadium, and finally settled at Milwaukee County Stadium from 1953 onward. This arrangement expanded their fan base and solidified Milwaukee’s role in the team’s history.
The Packers’ tenure in Milwaukee included notable moments, such as hosting the 1939 NFL Championship Game at State Fair Park, where they defeated the New York Giants 27–0 to secure their fifth title. The final game played in Milwaukee was on December 18, 1994, at County Stadium, where quarterback Brett Favre’s iconic touchdown run secured a 21–17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
Even after consolidating all home games in Green Bay, the Packers maintained a strong Milwaukee connection. They established the “Gold Package” season ticket plan for former Milwaukee ticket holders, ensuring continued engagement with fans in the area. Today, Milwaukee remains a vital part of the Packers’ extensive fan base.
